Maureen T. Upton, Principal Maureen Upton is Founder and Principal of Resource Initiatives LLC. She brings 12 years of executive-level communications experience to the table, solving complex messaging, branding and crisis communications challenges for global, Fortune 500 companies.
Before founding Resource Initiatives in August of 2006, she served as Director of Public Affairs & Communications for Newmont Mining Corporation, where she had primary responsibility for the Asia-Pacific region. In this role she worked extensively in Indonesia on communications related to both litigation and operational issues.
While working as a freelance journalist, Ms. Upton covered global public health and international sports (see Media). In her prior role at Goldman, Sachs & Co., she held positions in both the Equities and the Fixed Income, Currency & Commodities divisions of the firm. Previously serving as Vice President of Corporate Marketing & Communications for Chase Manhattan Bank (now JPMorgan Chase & Co.), she served corporate finance teams in the mining & metals and oil & gas industries, primarily in Latin America.
While an Account Supervisor at Edelman Public Relations in New York, she managed accounts with the Mexican government related to NAFTA negotiations and with the Brazilian government related to its privatization of energy, mining and telecommunications assets. She authored speeches as well as op-ed pieces for cabinet-level officials which appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and other national newspapers.
Ms. Upton has served on the board of one of the largest mutual fund complexes in the United States, Janus Funds, overseeing the management of funds in both international equity and US value categories. She was elected to the Council on Foreign Relations in 1994 and was appointed by the President of the Colorado State Senate to the Compliance Advisory Panel in the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in 2004.
She is a member of the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, the Colorado Mining Association, the Northwest Mining Association, Women in Mining, and the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.
Ms. Upton holds both an MBA in finance and a Master of International Affairs in economic policy from Columbia University in New York, a Diploma de Estudios Hispánicos from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and completed her Bachelor of Arts in philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese. |
